Mastery

Each of us has passions, but only a small minority of us are able to fully develop our passions. The support and training is just not there. And an even smaller minority is able to develop a passion into a mastery that becomes a source of livelihood or that can otherwise be shared with humankind.

But it does happen, and for those so blessed, the mastery is not only the source of personal happiness but it is also something that can be shared for the benefit of humankind. Those who can develop their passion for science become the doctors and research scientists who heal people and find cures to disease. Those who can develop their passion for writing become our authors and journalists. Those who can develop their passion for art and music become those who can entertain and inspire us.

Following up on the last section on love, we as parents and grandparents can do a great service in helping our children and grandchildren to identify their passions, and by providing guidance and support to help them develop and master their passions, thereby contributing to their personal happiness and the good of humankind.

The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence but the mastery of his passions.
— Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Discussion

  • Do you consider yourself a master of a particular subject?

  • Did this mastery evolve from a passion?

  • What lessons might you have for your child or grandchild?
